Tinubu's Government Faces Criticism Over Power Grid Issues

The Nigerian presidency, led by President Bola Tinubu, is under scrutiny due to the persistent instability of the national power grid, which has failed to provide adequate electricity supply since he took office in May 2023. Despite efforts to improve the power sector, including the assent to an electricity bill that allows states and private investors to operate mini-grid power plants, the electricity supply has remained below 5,000 megawatts.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported an average power availability of 4,901 megawatts, with a peak of 4,502 megawatts recorded in December 2012. Tinubu's administration achieved a peak generation of 6,003 megawatts in March 2025, yet the overall performance remains inadequate.

Plans to disconnect the national grid are set to follow the completion of a solar power project at Aso Rock Villa, with a budget allocation of N10 billion for 2025-2026. This decision has sparked widespread criticism among Nigerians, who view the solar installation as a betrayal of the government's commitment to improving national electricity supply.
