Tinubu Announces Major Reforms to NYSC Scheme

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has initiated a significant overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, following its approval by the Federal Executive Council on a Monday. This marks the first comprehensive reform of the NYSC since its establishment 53 years ago.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, announced the reforms, which aim to align the NYSC with Nigeria's modern economic realities. The review process, which began in 2025, seeks to transform the institution into a platform that focuses on civic responsibility, leadership, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship.

Key changes include extending the traditional three-week orientation camp to six weeks, providing specialized training across eleven career streams, and redesigning uniforms to reflect a more professional and technology-driven approach. The reforms also emphasize the importance of local graduates and will introduce a grading system for orientation camps.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to empowering the youth, who constitute nearly 70% of Nigeria's population, as part of his administration's broader economic strategy.
