Pressure on Tinubu to End NYSC Amid Rising Insecurity

There is increasing pressure on President Bola Tinubu's administration to discontinue the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme amid growing security concerns in Nigeria. Haruna Danjuma, President of the Parent Teacher Association Nigeria (PTA), highlighted the dangers faced by young graduates during their mandatory service year, particularly following reports of kidnappings and attacks.

The PTA is advocating for the program's discontinuation, stating that the government cannot guarantee the safety of participants. Isa Sanusi, Executive Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, echoed these concerns, criticizing the NYSC's management for leaving families to deal with the aftermath of kidnappings.

The urgency of the situation was underscored by the recent abduction of Musa Abba, a corps member from Zamfara State, who was kidnapped on January 9 while traveling to Sokoto to begin his service. His family reportedly struggled to raise the N10 million ransom demanded by the abductors, highlighting the severe risks associated with the NYSC program in the current security climate.
