SERAP Urges Tinubu to Probe ₦5.9bn NNPC Spending

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to investigate the alleged ₦5.9 billion spent on rebranding the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). In an open letter dated March 14, 2026, SERAP's Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability regarding the reported expenditures.

The organization requested that the Attorney General mandate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to identify officials who approved the payments and to examine the procurement process for compliance with financial regulations. SERAP warned that if their requests are not addressed within seven days, they would consider legal action to compel compliance.

The letter also noted that the NNPC reportedly paid ₦2.9 billion in incorporated expenses related to petroleum product pricing, contributing to the total alleged expenditure of ₦5.9 billion.
