NIALS Honors Prof Jadesola Akande's Legal Legacy

The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) celebrated the legacy of Prof Jadesola Akande, Nigeria's first female professor of law, during its annual memorial lecture held at the Ayo Ajomo Auditorium, University of Lagos. Prof Akande, who emerged as the first female law professor in 1981 and later became the first female vice-chancellor of Lagos State University, is recognized for her unparalleled influence on constitutional law and women's rights advocacy.

Keynote speaker Olaid Abass Gbadamosi, a professor of law at Osun State University, noted that her scholarly work has significantly shaped legal discourse and bridged critical gaps within Nigeria's legal system. The event emphasized the importance of her advocacy for women's rights and access to justice, urging stronger institutional adherence to the rule of law and greater participation of women in leadership roles.

The chairman of the occasion, Prof Abiola Sanni SAN, described Akande as a colossal figure in legal scholarship, whose intellectual legacy continues to inspire generations. Former NIALS Director General Abdulqadir Abikan called for the establishment of an endowment fund to preserve her memory.
