Middle East Crisis Threatens Nigeria's Food Prices

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is anticipated to result in increased food prices in Nigeria, primarily due to rising fertilizer costs. Abubakar Kassim, President of the Fertilizer Producers Association of Nigeria, stated in an interview that the current crisis has already disrupted global markets, affecting fertilizer prices.

He emphasized that farmers are preparing for the upcoming planting season but are concerned about the rising costs of inputs. The Federal Government has established a committee, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, to assess the crisis's impact on agriculture and recommend mitigation measures.

Ezeaja Ikemefuna, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, confirmed that solutions will be announced soon. Peter Dama, Chairman of the African Rice Forum, highlighted the critical role of fertilizer in food production and urged the government to reinstate fertilizer subsidies to alleviate the burden on farmers and prevent further food price hikes.
