UNICEF Urges Ethical Reporting for Children's Safety

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called on Nigerian journalists to prioritize the safety, dignity, privacy, and best interests of children in their reporting. This appeal was made by Juliet Chiluwe, Chief of the UNICEF Enugu Field Office, during a two-day Zonal Workshop on Ethical Reporting of Children held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Chiluwe stressed that journalists play a crucial role in shaping societal perceptions and must treat children as individuals with rights and dignity rather than mere subjects of news. She urged media professionals to consider the potential risks their reports could pose to children, advocating for responsible reporting that could expose injustices and mobilize communities.

Apostle Francis Nwubani, Director-General of the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that ethical reporting is both a professional requirement and a moral obligation. The workshop gathered journalists from various states to enhance their understanding of child-sensitive journalism.
