NUJ Advocates Professionalism in Security Reporting

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) convened its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State, where it addressed the professionalism of journalists in security reporting. The NUJ cautioned against sensationalism, glorification of terrorists, and excessive publicity that could aid criminal propaganda.

It urged journalists to uphold accuracy, balance, fairness, and credibility while considering national security and the safety of media workers. In response to ongoing insecurity in northern Nigeria, the NEC endorsed a Northern States Security Summit to be hosted by Zamfara State, aimed at developing strategies for tackling insecurity and protecting journalists.

The NUJ commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for its support in enhancing journalists' safety and called for improved partnerships. Additionally, the Union praised the Bauchi State Government for allocating over N400 million for the renovation of the NUJ Secretariat and urged other states to improve working conditions for journalists.

The NEC also approved a partnership with a law firm for legal support to its members and acknowledged UN Women for its efforts in empowering women journalists.
