REA Faces Scrutiny Over Solar Energy Fund Management

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), led by Chief Executive Abba Aliyu, is under investigation by the House Committee for its handling of 151.7 billion naira allocated for solar energy projects, including solar mini-grids and home systems. The committee expressed concerns over the agency's failure to provide clear answers regarding the status of foreign-backed electrification programs and the transparency of fund allocation.

They demanded detailed procurement files, audit reports, and information on contractors and beneficiaries. The REA has received substantial foreign grants, including 550 million from the World Bank and 750.4 million from the AfDB, yet issues of poor oversight and substandard installations have been raised.

The committee emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the management of renewable energy projects, particularly as Nigeria seeks to meet its climate commitments and sustainable development goals.
