Relentless harassment of Sowore must end – Amnesty International warns Tinubu’s govt

Amnesty International has issued a warning to the Nigerian government led by Bola Tinubu, urging an immediate end to the relentless harassment and persecution of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore. The organization emphasized that Sowore is being targeted for peacefully exercising his human rights and facing multiple charges, including alleged terrorism financing and money laundering.

Amnesty International condemned the ongoing arraignment of Sowore as a travesty of justice and called for the charges to be dropped, citing politically motivated investigations. The group also criticized the probe into bank accounts linked to Sowore's media platform, Sahara Reporters, as part of a wider crackdown on dissent in Nigeria.

Amnesty International stressed that Sowore must be allowed to freely express himself and assemble peacefully without interference, highlighting concerns of torture allegations during his police detention. The organization reiterated Sowore's status as a prisoner of conscience and called for an end to arbitrary arrests and human rights violations in the country.
