SERAP, Amnesty Int'l Urge Tinubu to Drop Charges Against Sowore, X on Social Media Posts

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Amnesty International have called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General to withdraw cybercrimes and defamation charges against activist Omoyele Sowore and others for critical social media posts. They urge the Department of State Services (DSS) to stop misusing the judicial process to stifle dissent and violate Nigerians' rights.

The groups emphasize the need to protect citizens from the weaponization of the justice system and Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs). This move is seen as crucial to upholding freedom of expression and peaceful dissent in Nigeria, in line with the country's constitution.
