Borno State's Oath for Repentant Terrorists in Reintegration

Borno State officials, including the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, stated that repentant terrorists will swear an oath with the Quran before their reintegration into society. This initiative is part of a rehabilitation and deradicalization program aimed at reintegrating 744 former terrorists from various states, including Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and Kano.

Gambo emphasized the importance of the oath as a strategy to prevent these individuals from returning to terrorism. However, she acknowledged significant challenges, such as financial constraints affecting the program's smooth operation and the need for adequate support in terms of food, clothing, and education.

Concerns have been raised by figures like Afam Osigwe from the Nigerian Bar Association and Isa Sanusi from Amnesty International Nigeria regarding the lack of transparency and oversight in the reintegration process, which could potentially lead to violence and neglect of victims' rights.
