Borno State Reinforces Peace with Terrorist Reintegration

The Borno State Government has successfully reintegrated 720 men formerly involved in terrorist activities, along with 992 spouses and 2,050 children, through a deradicalization and rehabilitation program in Maiduguri. This initiative, which is part of a non-kinetic approach to combat terrorism, was highlighted during an event attended by Governor Babagana Zulum and retired Brigadier General Abdullahi Ishaq.

The program, which began on July 5, 2021, encourages former insurgents to abandon violence and embrace peace, with 350,000 individuals reportedly willing to surrender. The reintegration process includes skill acquisition to facilitate their return to society.

However, the program raises complex questions regarding justice for victims and the long-term implications of granting former terrorists a second chance. Critics, including retired naval officer Dickson Olisemelogor, warn that such reintegration efforts may inadvertently allow perpetrators to infiltrate security agencies without addressing the root causes of their actions.
