Report: 48 reps, 5 senators recorded zero contributions in 1 year

A report by the Erudite Growth Advancement Foundation revealed that 48 representatives and 5 senators in Nigeria recorded zero contributions in legislative activities from June 14, 2023, to June 13, 2024. The Deliberative Barometer Productivity Report highlighted the lack of engagement by these lawmakers in parliamentary debates and bill sponsorships, which undermines legislative accountability and participatory governance.

While the Senate had more plenary activities compared to the House of Representatives, the report noted that economic issues dominated discussions in the upper chamber, followed by security and education. High performers in driving parliamentary deliberations included Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin and House Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere.

The report emphasized the need for robust legislative deliberation to ensure lawmakers remain accountable to their constituents and strengthen Nigeria's participatory democracy. Citizens were encouraged to scrutinize the performance of their representatives and engage in active debate to fulfill the core duties of a parliamentarian.
