Tinubu Restructures NSIB to Enhance Transport Safety

On March 5, 2026, President Bola Tinubu approved a historic restructuring of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), elevating its operational scope beyond aviation to include multimodal transport safety. This decision aims to align NSIB with global counterparts like the American National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the British Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Captain Alex Badeh Jr. has been appointed as the new Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NSIB, bringing his extensive background as a certified pilot to the role. The restructuring is expected to enhance safety measures in Nigeria's transport sectors, addressing the alarming rise in road accidents, which claimed 5,421 lives in 2024.

The NSIB will collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to tackle the urgent issues of road safety. The President has directed Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi to work with the National Assembly to amend the NSIB Act, ensuring legal backing for its expanded role in transport safety.
