Nigeria's Reps Propose National Decarbonization Bill

The House of Representatives in Nigeria is deliberating on a new legislative framework to support the country's decarbonization plan, which is part of efforts to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Chairman of the House Committee, Merci Aikoy, introduced the proposed National Decarbonization Bill, which aims to strengthen climate governance and establish a comprehensive framework guiding Nigeria's energy transition.

This bill is designed to complement existing climate initiatives, particularly the Climate Change Act of 2021, which established the National Council on Climate Change. The proposed legislation has already passed its first and second readings in the House and will proceed to public hearings where stakeholders will contribute to its final consideration.

The committee is engaging a wide range of stakeholders, including private sector players in the oil and gas industry and environmental groups, to harmonize policies supporting Nigeria's decarbonization agenda. Aikoy emphasized the need for adequate funding and clear policy direction to achieve the program's objectives, with plans to host a national carbon summit in June to broaden consultations.
