Nigeria's Reps Push for Legal Framework on Decarbonisation

The House of Representatives in Nigeria has initiated legislative action to create a legal framework for the country's decarbonisation plan, which is part of efforts to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and strengthen climate governance. Whingan, the chairman of the House Committee on National Decarbonisation, disclosed this during a technical roundtable on the national decarbonisation programme held in Abuja.

Although Nigeria operates under a Climate Change Act, the proposed National Decarbonisation Bill aims to reinforce existing policies and provide a coordinated legal framework for the country's climate transition efforts. The bill has already undergone its first and second readings in the Green Chamber and is expected to proceed to the public hearing stage by the end of the month.

The committee plans to convene a national carbon summit in June to discuss the implementation of the national decarbonisation strategy, emphasizing the need for grassroots involvement and collaboration across various sectors.
