House of Reps Launch Save Democracy Group Amid Crisis

On Friday, members of the House of Representatives from various political parties unveiled the Save Democracy Group (SDG), calling for the immediate reconvening of the National Assembly to tackle significant constitutional, fiscal, economic, and security challenges threatening Nigeria's democratic stability. The lawmakers, including Rep. Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante (NDC-Rivers), Hon. Abubakar Yahaya Kusada (APC-Katsina), and Hon. Mansur Musa Jega (ADC-Kebbi), issued a statement titled “Nigeria’s Democracy is Nosediving.” They described the SDG as a bipartisan coalition aimed at defending constitutional governance and legislative independence.

The group criticized the National Assembly for remaining on recess while critical issues worsen and condemned the approval of the Rivers State emergency proclamation through a voice vote. They also questioned the legitimacy of the House's passage of the Executive State Police Constitutional Alteration Bill on July 23, 2026, citing discrepancies in voting figures.

The lawmakers warned that silence on these matters would equate to neglecting their constitutional duties.
