Reps Demand Price Stability Policies for Farmers

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to urgently implement policies aimed at stabilizing prices of agricultural products. This call comes amid growing concerns over the financial losses faced by farmers across Nigeria, as articulated in a motion by Bamidel Salam, representing the Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in Osun State.

Salam emphasized agriculture's vital role in Nigeria's economy, contributing to employment, rural livelihoods, and food security. He raised alarms about the persistent decline in prices for staple crops and perishable agricultural commodities such as cassava, rice, and yam, which has already led to significant financial losses for farmers.

The motion highlighted structural weaknesses within the agricultural value chain, including inadequate storage facilities and poor market linkages, exacerbating post-harvest losses. The House called for immediate measures to establish structured off-take arrangements and price support mechanisms to cushion farmers against price declines.

Additionally, they mandated the Committee on Agricultural Products and Services to investigate the root causes of falling farm gate prices and report back within two weeks.
