Amnesty International Urges Rescue of Abducted Students

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to urgently rescue students abducted in recent attacks in Oyo and Borno states. On May 13-14, 2026, armed groups abducted 42 schoolchildren during an attack on a school in Askira Uba, Borno State.

Following this, on May 15, 2026, at least 40 schoolchildren were kidnapped in a separate incident in Orir, Oyo State. Amnesty International emphasized the need for immediate action to investigate these incidents and ensure the safe return of the victims.

The organization warned that the persistent threat of abduction is forcing families to withdraw their children from school, which could lead to millions of children abandoning their education. Amnesty criticized the government's repeated failures to prevent such attacks and called for accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
