Amnesty International Alarmed by Schoolchildren Abductions

Amnesty International raised alarms regarding the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Nigeria, specifically in Borno and Oyo states. The human rights organization reported that at least 82 schoolchildren were kidnapped during two separate attacks between May 13 and May 15, 2026.

The first incident occurred in Askira Uba, Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, where 42 pupils were abducted on May 13 and 14. The second incident involved approximately 40 schoolchildren who were taken by gunmen in Oriir Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to take immediate action to investigate these incidents, rescue the victims safely, and implement concrete measures to prevent further attacks on schools. The organization highlighted the worsening educational crisis in Nigeria due to repeated abductions, which threaten the safety of children and educators.
