Enugu Flooding Displaces Residents and Destroys Property

On September 20, 2026, severe flooding began affecting four communities—Mpu, Okpanku, Ndiabor, and Oduma—in Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State. The flood worsened on September 20 and 21, submerging parts of Afor Okpanku, Ivo Bridge, and surrounding roads.

Over 10 houses collapsed, and significant agricultural losses occurred, with rice, yam, and cassava farms destroyed. Residents evacuated to safer areas as heavy rainfall persisted.

Hon. Edwin Ogbuka, the Councillor for Mpu Ward, described the situation as life-threatening and attributed the flooding to the overflow from the abandoned Ivo Dam project. Community leader Mr. Chukwu Magnus Dele reported that six villages were affected, with displaced residents seeking refuge at a local school.

Youth Leader Mr. George Ahaefuna called the disaster unprecedented, while shop owner Mrs. Patricia Chukwu lamented the loss of goods. Aninri LGA Chairman Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku expressed concern over recurring flooding due to the uncompleted Ivo Dam project and mentioned plans for a joint visit to assess the dam.
