Nigeria's Oxygen Supply Initiative to Save Mothers and Children

The Nigerian Federal Government is committed to enhancing the supply of medical oxygen across the country to address the high rates of maternal and infant mortality. Dr.

Gilbert Shetak from the Federal Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of reliable oxygen supplies in hospitals and clinics, particularly during childbirth and for severe respiratory infections. The government aims to implement strategies that will significantly reduce preventable deaths among mothers and children.

Efforts include expanding liquid oxygen production and engaging with private sector players to boost production capacity. The initiative targets primary healthcare centers as the first point of contact for communities.

A meeting was held on Tuesday in Abuja, led by Eno Edem Igabo, to coordinate national oxygen supply efforts, with a focus on grassroots healthcare. The government acknowledges the disproportionate impact of medical oxygen shortages on women, particularly during antenatal care and childbirth.
