Borno Warns Ex-Insurgents of Death Risk in Returning to Terror

The Borno State Government has issued a warning to rehabilitated ex-insurgents about the dangers of returning to terrorist groups, stating that such actions could lead to death. Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, expressed concerns during an interview regarding the reintegration of former fighters into society.

She noted that there is a misconception that these individuals would not revert to violence, emphasizing that once they surrender, they are no longer considered part of the insurgent group. Gambo explained that the state's deradicalization program includes an oath-taking process using the Quran, which carries serious consequences for those who return to violence after swearing.

She acknowledged that funding remains a significant challenge affecting the program, particularly in providing food, clothing, and education for the beneficiaries.
