RIBADU’S QUIET REVOLUTION

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Malam Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser (NSA) in June 2023, marking a significant departure from the traditional norm of appointing military generals to the role. Ribadu, a former police officer and pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), brought a wealth of institutional memory and investigative experience to the position. His appointment signaled a shift towards prioritizing human security and policing at the core of Nigeria's national security architecture.

Ribadu inherited a complex security landscape, with challenges ranging from Boko Haram in the Northeast to banditry in the Northwest and secessionist movements in the Southeast. However, under his leadership, significant progress was made in restoring peace to volatile regions like Southern Kaduna and Zamfara, tackling oil theft and militancy, and improving overall maritime security.
