Rights Groups Condemn Imprisonment of Zainab Sheriff

Zainab Sheriff, a prominent Sierra Leonean singer and political activist, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison for inciting violence during a political rally in January. Prosecutors presented video evidence during her trial, claiming she made threatening remarks about the electoral process.

Her conviction has sparked outrage among human rights advocates and opposition figures, who argue that her imprisonment reflects a growing crackdown on free speech in Sierra Leone. Yvonn Aki-Sawyerr, the mayor of Freetown and a member of the opposition People's Congress Party, stated that Sheriff’s case exemplifies the fear instilled in society, discouraging individuals from speaking out.

Sheriff was arrested on February 20 and has remained in detention despite pleading not guilty and multiple bail applications. Her case has drawn attention to the broader issues of political repression and the treatment of women in Sierra Leone, with advocates warning of increasing authoritarian tendencies in the country.
