Opposition Violence Raises Alarm Before Nigeria's 2027 Elections

Concerns over Nigeria's political stability have intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections due to rising violent attacks on opposition leaders and party offices. Reports indicate incidents across several states, including Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Kogi, Edo, and Rivers.

The opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, People's Democratic Party, New Nigeria People's Party, and Labour Party, have condemned these attacks, alleging they are part of a deliberate strategy by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate and weaken rival political factions. Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC's national publicity secretary, accused President Bola Tinubu and the APC of orchestrating these attacks to manipulate the political environment.

He noted that the attacks are not isolated incidents but part of a broader strategy to discourage opposition participation in the elections. The PDP's spokesman, Ini Ememobong, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the APC's actions are emboldened by the president's rhetoric.

Both parties plan to document these incidents and report them to international bodies.
