Rivers Assembly Suspends Impeachment of Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy Ngozi Odu. This decision was made during a plenary session on Thursday, where Speaker Martin Amaewhul announced the withdrawal of the impeachment process, citing an intervention from President Bola Tinubu.

Earlier, the assembly had commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu, alleging gross misconduct, which included accusations of demolishing the assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for assembly services, and refusing to comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding financial autonomy for the legislature. The assembly expressed hope that the governor and deputy would henceforth act in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

The impeachment proceedings were initially initiated in 2026, but the current suspension reflects a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State.
