Rivers Lawmakers Urge Action on Bille Gas Leak Crisis

The House of Representatives Committee on the South-South Development Commission, led by Chairman Mr. Julius Pondi, has raised alarms regarding the slow response to a gas leak in Bille Community, located in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The committee emphasized that the ongoing environmental disaster threatens the survival of local residents, who face severe pollution, health risks, and damage to their livelihoods. Despite the gas leak being reported on October 25, 2025, no significant actions have been taken to address the situation.

During an interactive session, the committee aimed to investigate the circumstances of the leak, assess the responses from the operating company and government agencies, and identify necessary interventions. Mr.

Pondi stressed the importance of establishing facts without assigning blame prematurely, while also highlighting the need for sustainable development in the South-South region, which is crucial for Nigeria's economy. NOSDRA Director Cyrus Nkangwung confirmed that the gas leak remains active.
