Eric Chelle to Assess U23 Players in Russia Friendly

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who also serves as the head coach of the U23 national team, is preparing to invite up to 10 overseas-based U23 players for a friendly match against Russia scheduled for October 6, 2026. This match is part of Nigeria's preparations for the 2028 Olympic football qualifying campaign.

Chelle aims to assess and build a competitive squad, drawing from young talents in Europe and other foreign leagues. Players expected to participate include FC Alverca left-back Isaac James, Saudi Arabia-based striker George Ilenikhena, Sabah winger Christian Nwachukwu, and KV Mechelen forward Ayodele Adeshina.

The friendly will serve as a crucial opportunity for Chelle to evaluate players ahead of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series, which is essential for Olympic qualification. Additionally, Chelle plans to monitor domestic talents by attending Nigeria Premier Football League matches to identify outstanding young players for the U23 setup.
