Russia Recruiting Nigerians for Ukraine Conflict, EU Warns

Gautier Mignot, the European Union's ambassador to Nigeria, expressed concerns regarding reports that Russia is recruiting Nigerians to fight in Ukraine. During a morning briefing on Channel Television, Mignot highlighted a growing trend where African men and women are lured with promises of employment in military production.

He noted that women are reportedly offered jobs, while men are allegedly sent to the front lines. Mignot stated that this recruitment is part of a broader strategy by Russia to increase its military presence in Africa, including Nigeria.

He mentioned that testimonies from African recruits support these claims, despite Russia's denials, which Mignot characterized as an unwillingness to cease these practices. He emphasized the ongoing conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement.

Mignot urged for international pressure on Russia to engage in dialogue, stressing that military means alone will not achieve peace.
