Russia Expands Security Role in Sahel Amid Insurgencies

Russia's security footprint in the Sahel has expanded significantly as countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, led by military governments, seek Russian support amid deteriorating security conditions and strained relations with Western partners. This shift has resulted in a reduction of cooperation with traditional Western security allies, particularly following military coups in these nations.

Russian involvement includes the deployment of military advisors and private military contractors, notably the Wagner Group, to assist local forces in counter-insurgency operations. Reports indicate that this Russian support coincides with the withdrawal of French troops from the region.

Despite the apparent benefits of diversifying foreign alliances, concerns have been raised regarding the transparency of agreements and the long-term implications for national interests. Nigeria, while maintaining diplomatic and economic relations with Russia, has not pursued similar security arrangements, providing a case study on the evolving nature of foreign security partnerships in West Africa.
