Nigerian Returnees Share Xenophobic Experiences in SA

Nigerian returnees, including Rafiu Wasiu, Lara Jacob, and Justin Okonkwo, shared harrowing experiences of xenophobic violence in South Africa after being evacuated back to Nigeria. They described being treated poorly, with Wasiu recounting incidents of police extortion and intimidation.

Jacob's retail business was shut down due to documentation issues, while Okonkwo faced job rejection and threats. The returnees expressed relief at being back home but highlighted the trauma of leaving behind their livelihoods and families.

Adam Oshiomhole, a senator, urged the Nigerian government to consider retaliatory measures against South Africa in light of the ongoing xenophobic attacks. The situation reflects a broader issue of hostility towards African migrants in South Africa, exacerbated by economic challenges and social resentment.
