Hundreds of Nigerian citizens have returned home from South Africa aboard government-facilitated evacuation flights, many describing their time there as marked by relentless xenophobic targeting and mistreatment. Returnees arriving at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos recounted experiences of repeated harassment, intimidation, and violence that ultimately forced them to abandon livelihoods and abandon the country.

One mechanic who spent years working in South Africa reported facing constant discrimination and eventual displacement due to escalating hostility toward foreigners. The Nigerian government has arranged multiple evacuation flights to bring citizens back home, with at least 270 Nigerians expected to arrive in Lagos aboard Air Peace aircraft from Johannesburg.

The evacuations follow a documented spike in xenophobic tensions in South Africa, with returnees describing both direct physical threats and systematic economic exclusion. Several evacuees reported struggling with documentation demands and arbitrary harassment from authorities even when they presented proper identification papers.

Beyond immediate physical safety concerns, returnees detailed the economic toll of their forced departures. Many had invested significant time and resources building businesses and establishing lives in South Africa, only to abandon these assets under pressure.

Some left family members behind during their hasty exit. One returnee expressed relief at reaching safety but acknowledged the difficult circumstances that made remaining in the country untenable, citing fear of potential loss of life as the deciding factor in the decision to leave.

The evacuations represent a concrete response from the Nigerian federal government to protect its citizens abroad during a period of heightened anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa. Returnees arriving at the airport displayed mixed emotions—relief at safe passage home alongside visible distress over the abruptness of their displacement.

The government had previously announced plans to assist affected citizens returning from the country.
