SAN Advocates for Increased Science Education Funding

The Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) has called on the federal government to institutionalize increased budgetary allocations for science education across all levels in Nigeria. At the 58th annual conference, President Prof.

Adeniyi Ogunjobi emphasized that science is crucial for national development, particularly in maximizing coastal cities, public health, and social equity in the blue economy. He criticized the current funding level, which is only five percent of the national budget, compared to the UNESCO standard of 26 percent.

Ogunjobi pointed out that many universities lack basic laboratory equipment and that researchers often use personal funds for their work due to insufficient grants. He stressed the importance of equipping laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment and providing grants for research materials.

Vice-President Prof. Maryan Aminu also highlighted the need to engage young people in science and called for increased support from private organizations.
