Saudi Arabia Closes Oil Pipeline After Drone Attack

Saudi Arabia has shut down its 1,200km East-West oil pipeline as a precautionary measure following a drone attack launched from Iraq. The attack resulted in injuries and damage, which are currently being assessed.

In response, Iraq's Prime Minister's Office confirmed the removal of a military commander in Maysan governorate, where the drones originated, and has initiated an investigation. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry stated that it has not retaliated, following a call from Iraq's Prime Minister, and expressed support for Iraq's efforts to prevent further attacks.

The Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the drone attack. The East-West pipeline is significant, carrying between four and five percent of the global oil supply.

This incident occurs amid escalating tensions in the region, particularly with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, and has contributed to crude oil prices exceeding $100 a barrel for the first time since July.
