Tragedy Strikes as Illegal Oil Siphoning Claims Lives

On September 3, 2026, a mass tragedy occurred at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, where scores of individuals suspected of illegally siphoning petroleum products are feared dead, with dozens more missing. The incident took place in the early hours when over 200 individuals, primarily youths from Okrika and surrounding communities, gathered to siphon oil from an illegal tapping point.

Community sources reported 43 deaths, although the Rivers State Police Command has not confirmed this figure, stating that an investigation is ongoing. The victims were reportedly overwhelmed by toxic fumes from high-pressure petroleum being pumped through an illegally connected pipeline.

Some individuals collapsed and fell into the river, while others who escaped suffered serious respiratory issues and were hospitalized. Of the identified victims, 37 were Okrika indigenes, with six others unaccounted for.

There are also reports of corpses floating in the river that have yet to be recovered.
