SDN Delivers Methane Emissions Tracker to NUPRC

The Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN) has presented the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Emission Tracker (NOGIET) to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in Abuja. Mr Inemo Samiama, the Board Chairman of SDN, described NOGIET as a crucial tool for improving environmental accountability in Nigeria's oil and gas industry.
The platform integrates satellite-based methane detection, regulatory mapping of oil blocks and pipelines, and emissions data from facility operators. This integration allows regulators to compare satellite observations with operators' reports, identify discrepancies, and prioritize inspections.
Nigeria aims to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030, and the NUPRC plays a vital role in this commitment. The platform was developed with support from the Global Methane Hub and is provided at no cost to the commission.
Samiama urged the NUPRC to incorporate NOGIET into its daily operations and maintain data security. The platform may also be showcased at COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, in November.
