Security Forces Rescue 16 Kidnap Victims in Kogi After Firefight

A coordinated security operation in Kogi State has freed 16 people who were abducted by armed criminals on Sunday, August 9. The victims were taken after gunmen attacked travellers on roads connecting Ojuwo, Ajengo, Memarebo, and Itobe communities in Ofu Local Government Area.

Personnel from the Nigerian Army's 21 Battalion, Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard, Nigeria Police Force, local vigilante groups, and hunters carried out the rescue. The operation unfolded after military intelligence placed the captives near Adumu Community in neighbouring Dekina Local Government Area.

Security forces engaged the kidnappers in a firefight that forced the criminals to abandon their victims and flee the scene. One hunter involved in the rescue operation was killed during the confrontation, according to reports from the Nigerian Army's Public Relations directorate.

One of the freed captives, Joshua Daniel, described his experience during captivity, noting he sustained injuries severe enough to cause bleeding throughout his time in the kidnappers' custody. He also reported that his abductors had made ransom demands.

The Army's Acting Director of Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, confirmed the successful rescue in a statement released on Monday. The operation demonstrates the coordination between military units, law enforcement, and community defence networks in responding to abduction incidents in the region.

The rescue came less than 24 hours after the initial kidnapping, based on the timeline provided by security authorities. All 16 victims were brought to safety, though some sustained injuries requiring medical attention.
