Nigerian Senate Faces Outrage Over Rejection of Electronic Election Result Transmission

The Nigerian Senate has convened an emergency plenary session in response to widespread public outrage over its rejection of the mandatory electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The decision to reject this clause has drawn condemnation from various quarters, including labor unions like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society organizations.

The Senate's move has been described as undermining the transparency of Nigeria's electoral process, leading to threats of nationwide protests and potential election boycotts. The Coalition of Political Activists and the Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) have strongly criticized the Senate's decision, labeling it as a democratic sabotage.

Additionally, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has urged the reinstatement of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results to restore public confidence in Nigeria's democracy. Despite the backlash, Senate President Godswil Akpabio defended the chamber's decision, emphasizing that the Senate did not outright reject electronic transmission but sought to retain discretionary provisions.

The House of Representatives is expected to harmonize the differing versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill with the Senate in the coming weeks.
