Senate Confirms Darma as Housing Minister to Tackle Deficit

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma as the Minister of Housing, following an extensive screening session. The confirmation was initiated by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, in line with President Bola Tinubu's request under Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Senators, including Moham Tahir Monguno and Adam Oshiomhole, highlighted the urgent need to tackle Nigeria's significant housing deficit, which affects approximately ten million citizens. They urged Darma to develop a robust mortgage system and utilize pension funds to finance housing projects.

Darma acknowledged the challenges in the housing sector and pledged to pursue policies that improve access to affordable housing. He also emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation and aligning policies with stakeholders to ensure resource availability.

Senators raised concerns about underutilized housing schemes and the need to complete abandoned projects, while also addressing urban planning issues in the Federal Capital Territory.
