Nigerian Senate Forms Special Committee on Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Nigerian Senate has formed a special committee to address the ongoing amendments to the Electoral Act. Chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbomir, the committee includes members such as Senator Adamu Aleiro, Senator Waziri Tambuwal, Senator Adam Oshiomhole, Senator Mohammed Goje, Senator Tony Nwoye, and Senator Titus Zam.

The committee's mandate is to review and reconcile varying perspectives on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022, with the goal of repealing and enacting the bill by 2026 to fortify the country's electoral system. The committee, led by Senator Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the importance of a thorough examination of the bill's implications for the electoral process, especially in light of past electoral challenges.

The lawmakers have been tasked to submit their report within 48 hours to prepare for the upcoming plenary session scheduled for Tuesday. The committee's primary objective is to ensure that the Electoral Act amendments align with best practices and meet the expectations of the Nigerian populace.
