Nigerian Senate Establishes Committee to Review Electoral Act Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Senate has set up a special committee to review the Electoral Act Amendment Bill in preparation for the 2027 elections. Chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbomir of the APC Ondo Central, the committee includes members such as Senator Adamu Aleiro, Waziri Tambuwal, Adam Oshiomhole, Mohammed Goje, Toni Nwoye, and Titus Zam.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced the formation of the committee after a closed-door session. The committee has been mandated to complete its work within 48 hours and submit a report before the next plenary session scheduled for Tuesday.

The focus of the committee is to reform the nation's electoral process, increase voter confidence, and encourage wider participation. The amendments seek to enhance transparency, address grey areas observed in previous elections, and introduce tougher penalties for electoral offenses.

The Senate aims to ensure that the Electoral Act reflects best practices and responds to the expectations of Nigerians.
