Nigerian Senate Extends 2025 Capital Budget Deadline

On March 31, 2026, the Nigerian Senate approved an extension of the implementation deadline for the 2025 capital budget to June 30, 2026. This amendment, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele from the APC representing Ekiti Central, was deemed necessary due to the inadequate execution of capital projects, despite the release of 30 percent of the funds to ministries, departments, and agencies.

Bamidele warned that without this extension, critical infrastructure projects under President Bola Tinubu's administration could face disruptions, exacerbating issues related to abandoned and partially executed projects across the country. The bill aims to enhance budget performance, promote efficient use of funds, strengthen fiscal discipline, and safeguard public resources from waste.

Additionally, the extension is expected to contribute significantly to economic recovery by sustaining capital expenditure flow and supporting ongoing development efforts across various sectors. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasized the urgency of the bill in aligning with the administration's infrastructure drive.
