Senate Approves N2.29tr FCT Budget for 2026

On March 11, 2026, the Nigerian Senate passed the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) budget amounting to N2.285 trillion, with a significant allocation of 76% directed towards capital projects. The budget was presented by Austin Akobundu, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, and was initially submitted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The budget allocates N160.78 billion (7.25%) for personnel costs and N378.23 billion (16.55%) for overhead expenditures. The capital projects receive the largest share of N1.741 trillion, aimed at enhancing infrastructure services across Abuja by the end of 2026.

The Senate welcomed the budget's focus on security, with N10 billion set aside for FCT security, reflecting a proactive approach to protecting residents. Senators including Abdul Ningi and Barau Jibrin praised the budget's structure, emphasizing its potential to transform Abuja into a world-class city.

The Senate also called for transparency in the FCT's revenue profile.
