Nigerian Senate Orders NAFDAC to Ban Sachet Alcohol Production by 2025

The Nigerian Senate has directed NAFDAC to enforce a total ban on the production and sale of alcohol beverages in sachets and small plastic bottles by December 2025. This decision follows concerns raised by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong about the health and social risks associated with sachet-packaged alcohol.

Despite previous deadline extensions, the Senate has warned against further delays, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable Nigerians, especially children, from the harmful effects of easily accessible high-alcohol content drinks. The motion received bipartisan support, highlighting the urgent need to address the unregulated access to cheap alcohol products.
