Senate Amends Electoral Act for 2027 Elections Notice

This adjustment is intended to prevent the presidential and national assembly elections, scheduled for February 20, 2027, and March 6, 2027, from coinciding with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The motion to amend the notice period was introduced to mitigate potential adverse effects on voter turnout and logistical arrangements during the fasting period. The amendment specifically alters Clause 28, which requires the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish election notices no later than 300 days before the polls, detailing election dates and nomination procedures.
