Nigerian Senate Passes Electoral Act 2026 to Enhance Election Efficiency

The Nigerian Senate has approved the Electoral Act 2026, repealing and enacting new provisions to improve the electoral process in Nigeria. The amendments aim to enhance efficiency by retaining some original clauses while introducing several amendments.

Notably, the bill shortens the election notice period from 360 to 180 days to enable the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly lead election adjustments. Senator Tahir Monguno emphasized the need for a shorter timeline to meet public notice requirements for the upcoming elections.
