Senate Approves Federal University of Medical Laboratory Science

The Nigerian Senate approved a bill to establish the Federal University of Medical Laboratory Science in Jos, Plateau State, during a plenary session. This initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's healthcare system and expand the country's capacity for disease diagnosis and research.

The bill received support from the upper chamber and is part of efforts to improve healthcare education and develop a stronger workforce in Nigeria's health sector. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele urged support for the measure, describing it as crucial for economic strengthening.

Prof. Sundai Etukudoh, Provost and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science Technology in Jos, emphasized the bill's potential impact on national health security and scientific advancement, particularly in light of challenges exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He highlighted the need for the university to operate without unnecessary delays and called on the federal government to prioritize its establishment, noting existing infrastructure that could support the institution's development.
