Nigerian Senate Approves Medical Laboratory University Bill

On Tuesday, during a plenary session, the Nigerian Senate unanimously approved a bill to establish the Federal University of Medical Laboratory Science Technology in Jos, Plateau State. This initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's diagnostic capabilities, improve healthcare delivery, and reduce the country's dependence on medical treatment abroad.

The bill originated in the House of Representatives and received concurrence from the Senate. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele urged lawmakers to support this measure, which is part of broader efforts to enhance the health education sector.

The Provost and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science Technology, Prof. Sundai Etukudoh, described the passage of the bill as a landmark development for Nigeria's healthcare system, emphasizing the need for scientific independence and improved disease diagnosis.

The Senate also approved amendments to the Federal Road Safety Corps Act and other bills related to healthcare infrastructure, underscoring the importance of enhancing local diagnostic services and addressing the shortcomings in Nigeria's healthcare system.
